Good news: It's a spa! Bad News: You go commando!

We are in the tip of the Kyushu island at this very special sand spa resort where my bro and I just got buried in 55 dgree (Celsius) sand. Anyone got a calculator convertor? But before we get to that, let's talk about the Japanese onsen, or, soaks. Japanese people love a good soak. You can tell that by the bathtubs they make which are more deep than they are long and prevalent in many Japanese households. You can find onsen houses all over Tokyo, but in the island of Kyushu which is dotted with active volcanoes everywhere, the onsen spa is driven by natural hot springs. As it turns out, the tour my awesome mom booked for us is the 100% pe-ru-cent-u spa tour, and for the past three nights we have stayed in the top hot spring spas all over Kyushu.

When my mom read the itinerary to me (did I mention - this entire thing is in Mandarin) she told me that no clothing or swimsuits are allowed in the onsens. I packed my bathing suit anyway holding out for hope, but sure enough, the Japanese were not kidding. You really go into these things 100% naked-o. The men and the women are separated, of course, but other than that one needs to be ready to sit in a steaming sulfur laden piping hot pool of water with a bunch of old Japanese soakers. If you're me, that's old Japanese ladies who have no problems walking around baring their boobs and butts and fellow tour buddies who pretend they don't know you.

There's a whole art to this. First, you must wear a traditional yukata from your room (worn the correct way of course, because if you cross your lapels wrong you will be considered a dead person) as well as slippers, both of which are provided.

The sense of security provided when they instruct you to bring your large towel and small towel is soon proven false, when you are told that you will be leaving the large towel alongside your yukata and undies in a basket in the changing area. Luckily, you are allowed to bring the small towel. But I am getting ahead of myself. So you go into the ladies section (the men's section if you are male), where the first room is the changing area, but is essentially a locker room but with baskets instead of lockers. If anyone goes to the gym in the states, it's a fairly similar scene - unabashed women walk around swinging their jugs like there's no tomorrow except here everyone's asian and also, you have no choice but to follow suit. Next, it's the removal of all your clothing - every stitch - and along with your small towel (which is the size of approximately 3 face towels in the states) you walk into the room with the onsen - the hot pool.

At this point, the concern turns towards hygiene. Don't worry, the Japanese are way ahead of us here. There are rows of little shower stalls with tiny benches, a bucket, and hand held shower nozzle and a vast array of soap and shampoo products with which one is to vigorously scrub every lick of loose hair follicle and skin cell off oneself before entering a pool. The Japanese will squeeze a huge dollop of liquid soap into the small towel and rub it so that it produces a huge, rich lather. The more soaping and scrubbing that is evident, the more comfortable everyone feels. Once this is done, you can finally enter any one of the pools. Many women who are shy, such as me, will hold the puny towel up to their bodies, and if you haven't spent the last few days stuffing your face with tempura and pork katsu, the towel should just about cover up your privates - on one side. Of course, you can't put the towel into the water, so there's a few minutes of awkward splashing around and stumbling into the water while adeptly raising the towel so as to maximize coverage while not breaking any etiquette covenants. Once you're in, you're more or less safe, as the water is cloudy with sulfur particles, and who are we kidding - the Japanese aren't there to look at body parts they've seen all their lives anyway.

The onsens we have gone to have typically had at least an inside pool and an outside one. We went to a beautiful outside one in the morning, when no one else was around. The birds where chirping (and some ravens were cawing) and the sun was rising and aside from the idea that I was naked in a hot pool with my mom, that the night before a bunch of guys had been naked in, it was really peaceful and relaxing. The first evening, we were at an onsen that was right by the onsen park near Obama (haha, no for real, it's called Obama!) and so we were right at the center of all the sulfur action where there was steam rising from the ground every where you turned.

The next evening, we went further south and were by a river, and this evening, we came all the way to the tip of the island to a very special resort that does sand baths. I believe this is the only place in the world that does this, "this" being, you lie in a patch of sand which they rake over you and you bake in it for 15 minutes and get your blood pumping. As you can imagine, it would be unideal to get sand all up in your privates, so this is one treatment that you do wearing your yukata, and because everyone is clothed, it is not gender segregated. It kind of looks like they're farming people; my more morbid tour compatriots said it looked like they were burying us, either way, there is a slightly creepy element to it, but it turns out it was really nice. The 55 degrees didn't feel so bad at all, and my brother and I were contemplating staying in until we were kicked out. The Japanese are so polite though, they would never do such a thing, so once 15 minutes were up we got out.

Anyway, we're really not allowed to bring cameras to any of these things, so here's a picture of my brother and me posing by the pool. FULLY CLOTHED, you PERVERTS!

Anyway, the thought of the impending naked bath was definitely unnerving, but I have to admit I got over it pretty quickly. Not too many people from our tour group went into the baths, and the rest of the women in there were old Asian ladies I didn't know anyway. Plus, people are pretty discreet and polite, and our tour guide was right - no one really cares to look at your goods anyway. In general though, it really just wasn't a crowded affair so the whole experience is relatively private. My brother though, still isn't that into it. Something about not like being in naked guy soup. I guess I wouldn't really want to imagine what it's like going to a guy version of this...

Konichiwa, oshitashi washi!

The first word means hello, the second one means - I don't know. I made it up.Our trip to Tokyo started off pretty much without a hitch. Not too much turbulence - and I can't believe we slept almost the whole 14 hours. Japan Airlines rock - with their little footrest, their adjustable side supporting head rests and faux marble bathroom floor tile. Class A all the way.

The flight attendant politely asked me to buckle my purse in.

It took forever to get into Tokyo proper, but once we did, we washed our faces to make a quick turnaround back out to the Tokyo nightlife. Our first stop was the restaurant Cunn (or Kun), which was insisted upon to me by my boss. It was easy enough to get to the general area by subway (we were in the women only car which seems to be open to anyone during non-rush hour) but once we got out at the Asakasa it was really tough to find. Basically we were in some random side street, relying upon a map that our gracious concierge had printed up for us - but was all in hiragana. After walking back and forth on the same street for about 10 minutes, I got frustrated and said we should ask the nearby hotel for directions. Imagine my confusion when we walked inside and found no hotel desk clerk. I looked around and saw this huge panel of pictures of rooms and soon realized that we had found ourselves in a "love hotel"! as it turns out, there is a desk clerk but she is hidden discreetly behind this mesh curtain.

My brother furtively took a picture while I tried asking here where the restaurant was. She spoke no English, and I believe, was a bit perturbed by the indiscreet nature of, well, us. Kind of flustered, she couldn't decipher the map and as I spied a couple coming in and hiding behind a wall, I just said thanks and good bye and motioned my brother to leave. I took care not to look at the couple who was coming in so as to preserve their dignity, for who am I but a heavy footed American tourist to embarrass a couple of locals about their rambuctious affair?

So we left the joint and proceeded to walk back and forth on that random side street until I pestered a local woman walking home with a big bag of toilet paper on where we were. Of course, the map was of no use to her either. Kindly she walked us around the bend and onto a cul-de-sac, whereby she too gave up and called the number of the restaurant. We were finally rescued by our host, Kuma-san, who materialized out of his clandestine, basement level restaurant and escorted us into his establishment.

The restaurant consists of just a bar that seats maybe 10 peoeple, and one more side table. There were two other sets of patrons there, and we were seated next to a big stuffed teddy bear sporting a panama hat. Over the course of the next two hours, Kumasan and his wonderful wife proceeded to feed us delectable dishes paired with the finest and most complementary drinks. It was truly special and remarkable.

Keiji salmon, maguro and toro paired with Japanese draft beer.

Thinly sliced mullet fish roe with sake.

Sendai beef with wasabi, soy bean paste and smoked soy sauce and 1780 madeira wine.

They have been all around the world and are good friends with my boss; they make their own branded smoked olive oil, salts, pepper and nuts, and will soon be serving their line of cuisine aboard Nippon Airlines for those fortunate enough to ride business class.

Afterwards, we tried to meet up with our friend M-dog, but were too tired to go clubbing in Roppongi so headed back to our hotel. We got caught in the closing of the subway as it was past midnight. Tokyo has very well dressed subway employees who wear hats and gloves and run around telling everyone on the platform that this is the last train to ensure that no one is left in a lurch. Of course, that last train was going to other way, so my brother and I were forced to take a very expensive taxi. Basically, it starts at 710 yen (which is about $8).

(ok blogger sucks I'll fix these pics later)

We always laughed a lot

january, 1983

Me & my best friend Audrey Lee, circa 1991

Audrey: Have you seen the Ozzy Osbourne/Lita Ford video?
Me: There's a trial?
Audrey: The video.
Me: Oh, I know Lita Ford wants the song on her album and now she's suing Ozzy for it?
Audrey: No. The song was on Lita Ford's track.
Me: Oh. So what about the trial?
Audrey: There's no trial. Do you know they made a video for that song?
Me: Oh, yeah I guess so.
Audrey: Well, have you seen the Motley Crue video?
Me: No.
Audrey: Well, you know how in the Ozzy Osbourne video he's pushing the columns?
Me: Oh, yeah.
Audrey: Well they do that in the Motley Crue Without You video.
Me: Oh.
Audrey: And they've also copied some of the Tears for Fears video. Have you seen it?
Me: Well, some of it.
Audrey: Well, you know where they have all those things flying around?
Me: Oh, yeah...
Audrey: They copied that. Man, they copy everyone.
Me: Oh, yeah.

(pause. I have a confused look on my face)

Audrey: Have you seen the Motley Crue video?
Me: No.
Audrey: Have you seen the Ozzy video?
Me: No.
Audrey: Have you seen the video for Tears for Fears?
Me: Well, some.
Audrey: Oh, well then you don't know what I'm talking about. Well, Motley Crue just copied everyone!
Me: Oh.

(pause.)

Me: Is there a trial?

we laugh....

Learning something new every day

My favorite button on my DVR remote is the little REPLAY button. It helps for when I say...am fast forwarding through commercials on super triple pass ludicrous speed, and overshoot. Which I do ALL the TIME. But what about when I encounter the exact opposite problem? I haven't kept my finger on the >> long enough, and so I'm just 5 seconds shy of restarting my program, but really don't want to sit through the end of this Used Catheter ad. Where's the button to just inch forward ever so slightly without overshooting? I'll tell you! That very handy PLAY button is dual purpose, multi functioning! Not only does it play, it unpauses, makes Kraft Mac 'N Cheese AND eeks your programming forward! Try it. It'll change your life.

re: status
you LittleMissSunshine, or another LittleMissSunshine?
LittleMissSunshine: harro
i'm here!
i'm "chinese", so i must find the best deals out there!
i was just putting it there, cuz after much searching, i found a free shipping code
from this obscure website. i was looking for the LONGEST time for these plastic inserts for my drawers to turn them into filing cabinets
i was ALMOST going to order from a canadian store and pay $15 in shipping (for a $8 order)
me: yeah i remember that conundrum
LittleMissSunshine: and then i found a US based company that i got the shipping for free :)
ugh. so annoying.
so, i hope it works...
i was so proud of myself that i had to change my status :)
so... wait. are you saying that i'm NOT normally a "deal hunter"?
i pride myself on finding discounts and getting things for as cheap as possible... :)
me: oh i didn't realize that
i just thought you liked to shop and travel
LittleMissSunshine: i like to do both... but i like to do it on the cheap :)
although, for travel, i'm willing to splurge a little
:)
me: dude, i totally know you're a discount hound
EVERYONE knows it
i was just playin' witcha
LittleMissSunshine: hehe... oh. hehe. sorry. i'm gullible.

and then you answer
"nothing"
and then he goes
"LOL"
and then he goes on to say, wtf there is nothing funny about that exchange!!!
horsey: lol
me: thank you for proving my pt
horsey: its more like "roger that" when I got nothing to add
but you can't say "roger that" to a story
usually I'm doing something when ppl IM, so I read what they say, and then write lol so they know I read it
sometimes it backfires
like when a friend told me about her miscarriage
me: OMG. LOL

I'll take children over impending death any day

Remember that time when I asked for some turbulence in order to get the kids in my section to settle down? Oh, may I never be so scornful again. The next children on a plane I see will be angels to me. My last flight to Cali rendered me fearing for my life and wondering what bad thing I had recently done to deserve this. True, I had secretly chuckled when an annoying lady dropped her snow white ball of yarn on the subway and it rolled across the floor, but good heavens did that really deserve 6 solid hours of pressurized torture? I was pissed off at myself for not having deposited my expense reimbursement check before my flight because now it would surely burn up in the flames of the crash. I found myself wondering if my company would be cool enough and reissue the check for my parents – I’d hate for them to think I had perished with not a penny to my name. Yes, I have my priorities.

Basically, from the minute we finished our already rocky climb to the minute we touched almost bankrupt California soil, we had on and off turbulence every 20-30 minutes. Several points throughout the flight I looked at the map hoping we would be landing soon, only to find that we were still over Michigan. Curses! Each time the plane would rumble and tumble and shake, I was desperate for the pilot to get on the PA to make some sort of comforting announcement along the lines of “Folks, it’s going to be bumpy for probably the rest of this flight, but you’re not going to die. Because, I, am Captain Sully!” Instead, right after checking the map only to find we were just over Utah (damn, two more hours!!), we heard this.

Ding.

“Aaaah, folks? Well, we didn’t have enough gas to get to San Francisco, but we had enough to get to Salt Lake, so we’ll be landing in Salt Lake to refuel. We hope you’re ok with that decision, but we just thought it would be better than losing our place in line at JFK to refuel, and then waiting another hour for takeoff. We figured we should just go ahead and get outta Dodge. So, aaaaah, yeah. We hope you’re ok with that.”

Wait, what??

Obviously we made it, but that was easily one of the top 5 worst flights of my life. All I have to say is, for my flight home…bring on the kids!

Remember Dr. Shatner?

I didn't. Until I got this phone call today.

Ring ring
Me: Hello?
Lady on phone: Hi uh what elevator bank do we have to take to get to Dr. Shatner?
Me: (after a mini fit of elation, shock, thought processing) Um, this isn't Dr. Shatner's office. What building is Dr. Shatner in?
Lady: What?
Me: What's the address of Dr. Shatner's office?
Lady: Oh um. 500 1st Avenue
Me: Yeah this isn't that building. What number are you trying to dial?
Lady: Oh um. ### - ## 6 #.
Me: ! This is ### - ## 9 #!!! You dialed the wrong number.
Lady: Oh um, thanks. Ok.
Me: Bye.

Should I call Dr. Shatner and find out if he was ever able to see Mr. Fishman???

Announcements a Captain should not make

Ding.

"Aaaaaah folks. Welcome aboard and thank you for your patience. This is your Captain. Well, it was a little bumpy coming into Vegas, and it may be a little bumpy getting out. Aaaaaah. Not due to turbulence, but it's very hot today, and the heat bounces off the tarmac and."

Silence.

Ding.

?! "...and.." what!? What!? What does the heat do?!

How is this a good value proposition?

Ok. It's hard to tell, but the bag of dried squid on the left is 3oz and costs $2.48. The bag of dried squid on the right - same exact brand and flavour - is 6oz and costs $5.15. I grabbed two of the 3oz bags, but not before standing there a good 8 minutes doing every arithmetic combo possible to make sure it wasn't a mistake and staring at the labels to make sure I wasn't seeing it wrong. Thought you were slick, Chinatown?

New DVR remote = More efficient time wasting

One Sunday, my remote control stopped working. I felt confused, anxious and slightly nervous and after pacing around my living room for a little bit, I took the plunge and went down to my parents apt. As a temporary solution, the risk of finding them there was worth the reward of watching hours upon hours of mindless TV, or so I thought. I didn't have the TV on for more than 7 minutes before my mom came in and started asking me all sorts of questions including but not limited to why I didn't have a boyfriend, why I wasn't folding laundry while I watched TV, why my brother didn't book them a cheaper ticket to Orlando than our cousin did for our uncle, and why the guy who was just killed on LOST was still alive. Obviously I didn't know the answers to any of that but I did know this: I had to call RCN ASAP and get my own remote.

So on Monday the first thing I did when I got to the office was dial up RCN. All I wanted to know was where the RCN office was so I could hand in my broken remote and get a new one - hopefully the one with the specially shaped buttons to match the pictures on my screen. After spending 45 minutes punching in a series of numbers so the RCN phone system can locate me, some lady picks up and asks me for permission to record this conversation for quality control purposes [read: so we will have a recording of you when you verbally abuse our customer service associates]. Hastily, I reply yes. Afterall, all I really want is the address of the nearest RCN office. She proceeds to ask me for my address, my phone number, my date of birth, and what my very first pet's name was. I tell her that I just want to know where RCN is located, which she glosses over but not before asking me to start diagnosing the problem.

Me: I just need a new remote. Mine is broken.
Rep: How do you know it's broken?
Me: Well, I replaced the battery, and that wasn't it.
Rep: Ok, would you please turn your cable box off for one minute.
Me: I'm not at home.
Rep: Would you like to call back when you are at home?
Me: No, I just want to know where the nearest RCN is.
Rep: Miss we need to make sure the problem is with your remote.
Me: Well I know it's the remote, and not the cable box.
Rep: How do you know this, Miss?
Me: I used my parents' remote, and that worked fine.
Rep: Ok, Miss.
[typing]
[typing]
[typing]
Me: Hello?
Rep: Yes Miss.
Me: Um, can you just tell me where the RCN office here is??
Rep: Yes Miss.

So she tells me where it is, and then tells me that I need to bring a photo ID and 3 months worth of my RCN statements. Twice. For a remote control. Who are these people?

Needless to say, the next day, I brought my old remote in along with all my documentation. I even brought my birth certificate for good measure. This is how it went down. The lady that sits behind the glass panel saw me coming in and held out her hand. I pulled out my remote and slipped it under the panel. She took it and swapped it out for a brand new remote, complete with batteries, and those coveted buttons.

I am now on my couch happily watching endless reruns of Without a Trace.

Captain, please turn on the seatbelt sign

I've never asked for this before, but OMG seriously. I need some turbulence, BIGTIME! I’m on a 6 hour flight to Cali and somehow I got stuck in the plane's romper room. How do people find this acceptable? There's a family of three toddlers back here and although they’re accompanied by three adults, they’re jumping around, screaming and running up and down the aisles. Where are the flight attendants? Wait you're in the back playing Sudoku and reading US Weekly? I didn't know I bought a ticket on Laissez Faire Airlines!! Since adults don’t feel like taking these mini demons under control, I am now praying to Buddha, God and Jesus and Baby Jesus Joseph and Mary Mother of God for some weather event to shake these kids into submission. (I know Guys, I'm usually asking you to stop the bumping and shaking.) C’mon, anything. Jostle us a little. Or a lot. Throw in some rumbling. Let’s even drop a few feet. Sound that DING. “……The Captain has just turned on the seatbelt sign. Please take your seats immediately and buckle in.” Anything? Anything? Nada? It’s all sunny and clear? Wow I can actually see canyons and mountain ranges. Beautiful. But those KIDS ARE STILL GOING CRAZY! Let me scare the guy next to me by reminding him of that recent flight that hit an air pocket and dropped so hard some lady cracked her skull on the ceiling of the cabin. It didn’t work. Hey buddy, check out this picture on the front of my paper that shows the DC Metro train crash. No dice. No, stop feeding them Coke. Argh!

And you thought Brazilians were hot

I just got back from Israel. It was a really memorable trip to an amazing, historical site blah blah blah Jerusalem blah blah blah Dead Sea blah blah Armenian Quarter zzzzzzzz.

Look. All you need to know about Israel, and Tel Aviv in particular, if you didn't know this already, is that the people are hot. HOT. As in rugged and gorgeous and good looking. The men AND women. I'm not sure why and I tried to break it down as such: the women like to have their hair long and flowing and like to wear shiny dangly earrings and bare their nice tanned shoulders. Speaking of tans, everyone there is casually tanned, the "ah I was playing paddle ball on the beach for a little too long" tan not the "I just evened myself off on the tanning bed" tan. Guys have good hair and even if they don't, they do that scruffy unshaven thing which wouldn't really fly here but works there. Everyone's got dazzly sunglasses and is in good shape and has a confident casual air about them. I could go on, but here's the thing. I realized that this good looking thing is purely because they're there. After spotting a few guys who one might consider hot, and being completely surprised after hearing their American and even Australian accents, I realized something was up. At the airport, I tried to picture the guy looking for bombs in my luggage (yes, hot) at a bar in NYC. He would have looked less hot there - in fact, I don't think I would have even noticed him. I think. When barthie was taking a picture of all of us girls at the wedding, he remarked, You know, you guys are the best looking crew out of your grad school I've seen. At the time I thought "Naturally." but now I realize it was just the Israeli factor. So yeah, if you need a quick upper just take a trip to Israel and you will be magically transformed into a creature of beauty admired for your aesthetics alone.

mr. fishman & dr. shatner & the girl who wrongly got the msg

there is an elderly man, somewhere in the 718 area code, who will not be making his appointment to see the doctor on friday, due to access-a-ride declaring good friday a holiday, and him being unable to get another means of transport to the doctor. somehow, this elderly man got my phone number instead and gave my voicemail the message. i looked for dr. shatner to no avail, even after adding "-william" and the elderly man will not pick up his phone. i hope that events of calamitous proportions do not transpire somewhere outside my sphere due to this misdial of telephone numbers. then again, he did call me twice.

Jack & Kate: Always succeeding to make Lost suck

I hate that I love this show.

Also, I love that I hate this show.

Anyway, here are two things that I learned in watching tonight's show.

1) Jack and Kate are the only people on this planet that make two beautiful people going in for a romantic make-up kiss look utterly disgusting and unforgivably unappealing. And then they did it some more! I am now an asexual.

2) I have noticed that since last season, not a single episode ends without it being capped off by everyone in the room exerting a symphony of groans and "H-H-H-Whaaaaaat!?!?!?"s.

Things I Suck at #4

DVR.

I just got DVR - welcome to the late first decade of the 2000s, me! Yeah, not only did I just get DVR, but I also just got HD. I've had my kickass Samsung 40inch HD-envy inducing TV for over a year but it took me this long to get it set up really right. Somehow, I misunderstood and heard that for HD I'd have to pay an extra $12 or something ridiculous like that, and DVR would have been an extra $17 so I was looking at an extra $30 per month. This was last year. Anyway, someone was also selling a lifetime "TIVO" for $1,300 so I couldn't decide if I should do that or get the DVR, so I resorted to what I always do when I am wracked with indecision which is dump it into an excel spreadsheet and run a cashflow comparison. I think the breakeven was something like 3 years and 2 months, and luckyvespa pointed out that it would suck if the "TIVO" broke within those 3 years, which panicked me, but then told me that the chances that it would happen were low, so I felt better, but then he said, but yah, you know, it could break, so that left me confused. And in the end, I didn't do anything. For a year.

Anyway, so my mom was looking at her bill the other day and was wondering what all these random weird charges were, so I called up RCN to ask them, and then managed to get her some awesome deal called the Double Play package where by she got to keep everything she had (cable + HBO) AND upgrade the internet from 7MG to 10MG AND get an HD box AND get DVR, for $30 less than what she was paying!! So I called back, but this time as myself because apparently you can't ask about your cable if you're anyone else but the person on the bill, and got that whole thing for myself too, minus the HBO and $30 from my bill. I love it when you get MORE for paying LESS.

My friends made fun of me for the longest time for not having DVR and promised that it would change my life and that the quality of my TV would drastically improve. Nonsense, I said, I would only end up watching more TV, plus anything I miss I just watch on the internet. After all, it is the late first decade of the 2000s. But it's a mortal sin to pass up deals like this, and plus it's a recession and the iron was hot so I struck it. So, my bro graciously picked up my cable box and hooked it up for me because I was too busy being out of town and surfing some major Colorado pow, and I came back super excited to record everything in sight and check out all of Hollywood's wrinkles.

Talk about getting value - I finally get to use every button that's on this remote control. After fumbling around with it and recording a bunch of shows that I already watch on the Internet, I got impatient because there was nothing in my queue. So I started recording a bunch of random stuff like Giant Spiders on Discovery channel and If the Hoover Dam Were Built Today on History channel. Speaking of history, it dictates that if I have the opportunity to hoard stuff I will, and also I will never use it. By day 2, I had a cornucopia of CSI shows, some Daily Show and Colbert Report reruns, and Alton Brown episodes on butter, peas, and brussel sprouts. Good schtuff. By the way, if you're recording re-runs, then what gets recorded if you select "First run & repeats"? And if you select "All showings" on which airtimes to record, does the DVR know that it's already recorded the same episode of Bones - the one where they find the skeleton in the closet - twice? But the trickiest thing about DVR is mastering the fast forward. That is, when I do even realize I'm at a commercial that I am supposed to be fast forwarding.

You can fast forward it at 3 different speeds, and of course me being the uber impatient person that I am, I like cranking it at ludicrous speed level 3. Which means that invariably, I will go over the end of the commercial and into the show. But the thoughtful folks over at Waste My Life Away Technologies anticipated this, and when you hit play again it will actually rewind back a few steps. Except, ludicrous speed level 3 goes so fast, that it actually dumps you back too far, like 2 commercials too far. So then I have to fast forward it again, and it's like this back and forth and back and forth and by the time I get it right I've pretty much wasted time more time than if I had let the commercial run on its own, at which point, I have major high blood pressure.

Here's another thing I've noticed - on my friends' remotes who have Time Warner cable, their "A" "B" and "C" buttons are all in the same colors and shapes that correspond to the choices on the DVR menu; namely, a yellow triangle, blue square, and red circle. On mine, they're all little grey ovals! Hey RCN, cognitive psych called. It wants its visual pattern recognition notes back, because apparently you have no use for them, thanks a lot. Anyway, so yes, DVR has certainly changed my life, by showing me one more thing I suck at, and helping me drain my precious time faster and more efficiently.

Thoughts on commuting

irateguy: Hey, watch where you're going!
me: Why don't YOU watch where YOU'RE going???
irateguy: You're the one who's runnin' around all ova the place!
me: How do you know?
irateguy: I saw you!
me: So if you saw me, you saw that I wasn't watching where I was going.
irateguy: So?
me: So that means that you bumped into me on purpose!
irateguy: What?? I didn't bump inta you!
me: Well then who bumped into whom?
irateguy: Nobody bumped into nobody!
me: Ok then. So what's the problem???
irateguy: ...
me: I THOUGHT so.

Or what I will say, next time.
